Depending on your current yoga mat and practice style, you will need to support your weight more in some postures when practising on a rug. It can take a little getting used to, but it will elevate your practice and encourage you to engage your core. The rug will wick away sweat as you become sweaty, but the grip will not increase as you sweat.

For regular practitioners, the transition should be easy and very rewarding. :) Practicing outside on grass or sand The surface of the earth is very rarely naturally flat (in Scotland, at least.) A yoga mat will exaggerate these bumps, and there will be 'pockets' where it does not lie flat, making it uneven to practice on.

If practising on the sand, the sand accumulates on the yoga mat, making it feel gritty and slippery.
